You are standing in the tee box, staring down the fairway on 18. It all comes down to this. You need to birdie this hole to break your all-time best score. You will not settle for par. Proving to yourself that you can play better than you did ten years ago is, at this moment, the most important thing in the world. You grab your trusty driver from out of the bag. “Don’t fail me now”, you whisper to it as if it were a close friend. From out of your pocket you pull your lucky golf ball. The serendipitous sphere should not have even been with you today. It should be displayed on your mantle, enshrined forever for the entire world to see, or at least those who pass through your home. It was only just the last round you played when this ball did something that all golfers dream of. It fell into the cup on the first shot. Hole in one! The ball rolls slightly to the right of the cup and about two feet away starts breaking left, just as you read that it would.
